3 Official Steps To Take When Selling A Junk Car

Romain Philippe

If you have a very old car that you need to get rid of, that is not a classic car at all but falls more into the category of a junk car, here three official steps you need to take when selling an old junk vehicle.

#1 Need To Transfer The Title

Just because the vehicle is very old does not mean that you no longer need to transfer the title. Transferring the title protects you when you sell a vehicle. When transfer the title of the vehicle, you are not just selling the vehicle, you are transferring all legal responsibility for anything that the car does or that someone driving the car does to the new owner. The buyer needs to sign the title; don't let them leave it blank. Then, you need to take the appropriate steps necessary in your state to send that information to the Department of Motor Vehicles or Secretary of State, whichever government body in your state regulates vehicle sales and ownership.

#2 Note That It Is An "As Is" Sale

When you make the sale, you need to make sure that you write on the title that the transfer is the vehicle "as-is". The buyer is agreeing that they are purchasing the vehicle in the current condition that it is in. This is really important when selling a junk car. You don't want the buyer to come back and try to sue you or get money back from you based on the vehicle being in poor condition. Make sure that it is clearly marked that the vehicle is being sold "as-is" on the title.

#3 Use A Sales Contract

In addition to signing over the title of the vehicle, when selling a junky older vehicle, it is still important to have both parties sign a sales contract.

The sales contract should include detailed information about the vehicle, such as its makes, model, year, style, color, VIN number and odometer reading. The sales contract should detail the condition that the vehicle is in, including if the vehicle is currently not working. It should be clearly stated in the sales contract as well that this is an "as-is" sale with no warranties or guarantees backing it up.

Make sure that the sales contract also includes your contact information as well as the buyer's contract information. It should also include the exact amount of money you are selling the vehicle for and how the seller is paying you.

You can find generic bills of sale online or contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles or Secretary of State for a copy of a state-approved bill of sales that you can use. Check it out for more information.
